Heredity VS Environment – Nature VS Nurture
Hereditary- involves the transmission of characteristics from biological parents to their offspring via genes at the time of conception. It is well established that the genes we inherit from our parents influence many aspects of our physical development; our blood type, eye and hair colour, body shape, the likelihood of developing certain illnesses or disorders, etc.
Environment- is the term used to refer to all the experiences, objects and events to which we are exposed to throughout our lifetime. Some environmental factors that influence psychological development include whether you have brothers or sisters, how you’ve been brought up, schooling, friendship groups, what you are exposed to in the media, and other personal and socio-cultural factors.
Another group of psychologists (contemporary psychologists) believed that hereditary had little to do with the psychological development. They believed that the environment in which an individual is born and raised in, which includes all their life experiences, is responsible for the person they become. I agree with this because I think although heredity may influence our physical side of things, for example, your personality, it doesn’t have much impact on our psychological development. Our psychological development has all got to do with what you’re exposed to in life, how you’re brought up, and the experiences you have in life. For example, take a kid who has grown up on the streets, homeless and parentless, and compare them to a kid who lives both their parents and has a roof over their heads, you can’t say that their environment and experiences wouldn’t impact on their psychological development and affect the person they’ll become. Almost every experience a person has in their life has the potential to impact on their psychological development in one way or another. But either way, it is neither one nor the other that make up who a person is; it takes both heredity and environment to shape development in a person.
